Selco Builders Warehouse has unveiled a £2.5m boost to its staff to help them deal with the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The leading builders merchant, which has 73 branches across the UK, will give 96 per cent of its 3,000-strong workforce a payment of £750 spread over five months.

The scheme will run from November until March, with £10 payments per individual each month, and has been implemented as a direct response to rising energy bills and general inflation.

Howard Luft, chief executive of Selco Builders Warehouse, said: “We are living through an unprecedented cost of living crisis and it’s placing pressure on household budgets, from energy to food and fuel to mortgages, up and down the country.

“We wanted to do what we could to provide additional support to colleagues who, day-in and day-out, give outstanding commitment, dedication and service to the ongoing growth and success of Selco.

“Everyone in the business, apart from the most senior figures in management, will benefit from these payments which are structured in such a way that they can have a direct impact on the rising monthly bills during the winter months.

“We are hoping this will help our colleagues through the challenging economic times the country is facing and we will continue to investigate further opportunities to support our people through this period.”

Employees working in Selco’s 73 branches, as well as its Support Centre in the Midlands and two delivery hubs in London and Birmingham, will all benefit from the payment.

Following successful trials, free breakfasts with locally sourced products will also be available for staff every day across the Selco estate.

In addition to this support package, Selco offers numerous career development opportunities to its staff with several hundred benefitting from apprenticeship programmes, including the introduction of a Driver Academy to offer employees the chance to retrain to become HGV drivers.

Howard added: “Our colleagues are undoubtedly the biggest asset of our business and we will continue to invest in them at every opportunity.”

With hundreds of trade brands always in stock, Selco’s UK branches are firmly focused on helping tradespeople complete their jobs as quickly and effectively as possible.

As well as offering trade services, Selco also has a strong digital presence including Click & Deliver and Click & Collect services and a new app to make life as convenient as possible for tradespeople.
