Prysmian welcomes Hackitt Review – comment

As a manufacturer committed to the design and manufacture of high quality, comprehensively tested and certified products into Britain’s buildings, Prysmian UK supports the conclusions of the Hackitt Review published in May 2018.
We welcome the focus on product testing and third party approvals in particular. In the cable industry, we recognise the need to ensure that substandard products are eliminated from the supply chain.
It is reassuring to see that this thorough review of practices within the building industry supports the absolute need for competent individuals to be responsible for the specification of the correct products for individual applications. We applaud the approach that avoids prescriptive rules and instead requires an outcome-based system.
The whole report could be seen as an indictment of much current practice, and, no doubt in common with most professional organisations, we would echo the call within the report that “the mindset of doing things as cheaply as possible and passing on responsibility for problems and shortcomings to others must stop.”
