Marco Verdonkschot, Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, said:

Despite an incredibly challenging year, the latest ONS employment data indicates that the construction industry has performed comparatively well against other industries.

For example, construction was one of the few industries that has not seen an annual fall in the number of vacancies since the beginning of the pandemic, indicating that jobs have remained available in the industry throughout most of the last year1.

This is not to say that the industry has been unaffected by the pandemic. Between June and September 2020 for example, construction was one of the worst affected industries in terms of jobs lost, with a decrease of 4.7%. The industry has shown resilience however, and since this dramatic fall, it has shown signs of recovery, with a 0.3% rise in jobs in the final quarter of 20202.

“These figures demonstrate that despite being hit hard by the pandemic, the construction industry is proving to be one of the most resilient, with positive trends in the recovery from job losses and overall vacancies.

It’s incredibly positive and reassuring to see that if the current trends continue, the construction industry is already well on its way to recovery.”
